Emotions through colour.

Most of us are unaware of the effects that the visual world has on our senses and feelings; blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body, it slows the metabolism and produces a calming effect. Red is a very emotionally intense colour, it enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure.

These emotions can be altered significantly depending on saturation, or depth of colour, but the basic principles are worth considering when deciding on your colour scheme.

  •  Red is associated with energy, power and passion.

  • Pink is fun, lively and feminine.

  • Orange stimulates creativity, encouragement and is invigorating.

  • Yellow is the colour of sunshine and is associated with joy, happiness and intellect.

  • Blue represents the sky and water. It is associated with wisdom, confidence and calmness.

  • Green suggests nature, harmony, freshness and fertility.

  • Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition.

  • White means light, purity and cleanliness.

  • Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious colour.

Attitudes towards colour differs from person to person so identifying the colours that affect you and your environment favourably or negatively will help you to feel and live better.

A closet or a fireplace could be your focal point, flanked by two pieces of furniture on each side. Emphasize your stay ideal focal points using two pieces of identical size on each side.

    Classic Contemporary

Brown Davis designed new paneling in the family room, where they repurposed furniture from the couple’s previous home. The print is by Robert Motherwell.

In the dining room, golden drapes warm the north-facing windows. The rosewood table, upholstered chairs, banquette and rug were designed by Brown Davis.

In the living room off the stair hall, Brown and Davis unified the seating groups with a Chinese-inspired rug of their own design.

The living room interior reflects your taste and the interior designer’s capabilities at the first step. The choice of colors and accessories is one of the most important factors in designing your living room. You need to understand what are the primary and tertiary colors and the basic principle of mixing them to get better shades. The sofa and other furniture that you use and the material they are made of is also an important factor. Color inspiration

When you're looking for a neutral color with visual impact, green is a great choice. It's always present outside and can be used for subtle punch inside, especially in living rooms, family rooms, and garden rooms. Mix greens just as you would in your garden, and then add complementary colors. Cool pastels, such as aqua, pink, and even white, work particularly well.

One of the most versatile colors, yellow creates the illusion of light in rooms with few windows. It also looks great in light-filled rooms, where natural light makes it appear paler. Yellow also pairs readily with colors found beside it in nature, such as tangerine, brown, fuchsia, lime green and persimmon. We see it used with success in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms.

In varying degrees of intensity, pink may show up in living rooms, master bedrooms, and girl's rooms. As an accessory, in rugs, pillows, ceramics, and art, a little pink goes a long way toward softening hard edges and bringing in pretty color. For a chic effect, try pink alongside deep-brown or black surfaces. Or mix it with earth tones and pastels, such as white, beige, camel, or honey-gold, for an understated look.

    Coastal living

Elegant drapes, and dark-wood furnishings give this room a sophisticated air, while a candy-stripe rug, and vibrant accent pillows keep it from feeling overly formal.

    Design Tips

DO start a reference file of inspiring pieces for the room you want to decorate.

DO use jazzy fabrics on pillows and ottomans that can be easily changed out according to season.

DON'T be afraid to use a strong color on the walls. Paint is the least expensive way to totally change a room's appearance.

DO avoid using floral fabrics on sofas—unless you know you'll never tire of it. Try and keep to solids and small geometrics.

DO consider the lighting effects in the room. Will there be an influence of natural light? Will you need ceiling lighting or will lamplight be enough?

DO keep your vision clear—you can be easily seduced in other directions.

DON'T use a rug that's too small—the furniture will appear to hang off of it, making the room appear smaller.

DO beware of scale and proportion and how all the elements come into play.

DON'T forget to break some rules and most importantly to have fun with it!
